Overview of the Garden Route

To many who have visited it, the Garden Route has a mysterious allure. In a province dominated by a Mediterranean climate and vegetation, the sheer extravagance of its tropical forests, brilliantly hued birds, multitudinous exotic plant species, tranquil inland lakes, densely wooded mountains, pristine beaches and meandering, reed-banked rivers is overwhelming.

The Garden Route boasts a necklace of bays, beaches, cliffs and capes strung together along a line of pounding white surf. The mountain ranges crowd close to the shoreline and, with a rainfall of around 2500mm on the peaks, bring a plentiful water supply to the narrow coastal terrace. This terrace is covered so densely in trees and flowering plants that a cultivated garden would pale into insignificance in comparison.

The climate is mild and equable, rainfall is scattered throughout the year, most of it falling at night. From the time of its first discovery this coastal terrace has delighted visitors. Flowers grow there in millions, the mixture of pleasant scents which arises from them, their colour, their variety, the pure and fresh air which one breathes there, is all amazing.

Seldom cooler than 20 degrees celsius, the coastal waters teem with game fish. Divers find a magical world of brilliantly coloured sea plants, molluscs and vast shoals of little fish. Victoria Bay is renowned as one of the world's best surfing beaches, and the the rivers have stretches of navigable chains of lakes. The Knysna lagoon lends iself to swimming, boating and fishing, the wild flowers and the high forests offer long drives beneath the trees.

The region is excellently served by roads and a railway from George to Knysna which is still served by steam locomotives. The area has many hotels, guest houses, caravan parks and camping grounds.
